WhatsApp Coexistence Mode
Keep chatting with customers from the WhatsApp Business App on your phone while Whapi handles automations through the official API. Same number, both working together.
One number, two ways to use it.
WhatsApp coexistence mode allows your phone number to be connected to both the WhatsApp Business App and the WhatsApp Cloud API at the same time. This means you can manually chat with customers from your phone while Whapi sends automated messages like order confirmations, abandoned cart reminders, and shipping updates through the API.
Enable coexistence in 3 steps.
Your number must already be on the WhatsApp Business App before you start.
Install Whapi and start setup
Open Whapi in your Shopify admin and click Connect WhatsApp. A Meta popup will appear.
Select WhatsApp Business App
When asked to choose your integration type, select "Connect a WhatsApp Business App". This enables coexistence so you keep chatting from the app.
Scan the QR code
You will receive a WhatsApp message from Facebook. Press Connect and scan the QR code to link your number. Done!

Follow these tips to avoid disconnections and sync issues.
Do not link extra devices
Only use the WhatsApp Business App on one phone. Do not link WhatsApp Web, Desktop, or additional phones. Extra devices cause disconnections.
Keep the app updated
Always use the latest version of WhatsApp Business App. Older versions may have compatibility issues with the coexistence API connection.
Stable internet on your phone
The WhatsApp Business App needs a stable internet connection to maintain the coexistence link. Use Wi-Fi when possible.
Use Team Inbox for multi-agent
If multiple people need to reply to customers, use the Whapi Team Inbox instead of linking extra devices. It supports unlimited agents without disconnection issues.
Do not uninstall the app
Removing or reinstalling the WhatsApp Business App can break the coexistence connection. If you need to reconnect, do it from the Whapi dashboard.
Wait 24 hours after device changes
If you link or unlink devices, WhatsApp may temporarily restrict the app for 24 hours. API messages through Whapi will continue to work during this period.
Common coexistence issues
Connection keeps dropping
Remove all linked devices from WhatsApp Business App (Settings > Linked Devices). Only use the app on one phone.
24-hour device restriction
Wait 24 hours. Avoid connecting or disconnecting devices during this time. API messages continue to work.
Messages not showing in the app
Ensure the WhatsApp Business App is open and connected to the internet. Restart the app if needed.
QR code scan failing
Retry with stable internet. Restart the app. If still failing, go to WhatsApp Business App > Account > Business Platform > Connect to a platform and use a manual code.
Broadcast not available
The broadcast feature in the WhatsApp Business App is disabled in coexistence mode. Use Whapi newsletter/campaign feature instead for bulk messaging.
